Baker BM Mounts

Baker BM have been doing an uprated gearbox mount for some time and a mounting for the engine for the first series Rallye, but the engine mount for the series two is new. I was down on the waiting list and mine came though in the post earlier today. They’re called group N mounts, but basically are firmer rubber with more substantial inserts. The engine mount also uses a larger diameter effective bolt as the standard one is prone to snapping.

My standard gearbox mount was pretty goosed.

The final silicon hoses arrived for the engine from BakerBM. These connect the block to the bulkhead connectors that feed the heater matrix.

I’m also nearly ready to get welding. The PortaMig is here, just waiting on some consumables and leather protective gear to get started.

Wiring Update

Spent a bit more time looking at the differences in the loom. I need two type-b switching relays for the:

  • Fan
  • Fuel Pump

The OMEX loom has to be wired into the rev counter/tacho on the dash (429). The Omex controls for the fuel relay and rad fan relay coupled with a positive power feed connect through the relays that are needed. I also need a 110cm 7.5mm OD cable with 9mm ring terminals for the run between the starter motor and alternator.

The OMEX loom needs supplementing with additional cable runs to the following in the engine bay:

  • Oil level sensor on front of block to dash (414/415)
  • Oil pressure switch spade connector on front of block to dash (410)
  • Alternator field to dash (1070)
  • Starter solenoid to ignition (100)
  • Gearbox reverse to passenger fusebox (c073-c07)
  • Oil temperature on back of sump to dash (411)
  • Coolant temperature (bottom blue connector) to dash (401)
  • Gearbox speed sensor to dash (465)

Comparing the Looms

Gave the gearbox the second stage of cleaning tonight and then cracked on with the wiring looms. Here’s the comparison:

Omex Loom: Standard Engine Loom:
  • ECU
  • Injectors
  • Throttle Position Sensor
  • Inlet Air Temperature
  • Coilpack
  • Coolant Temp (ECU)
  • Lambda
  • Crank Position Sensor

– – –

  • Fuel Relay
  • Rad Fan Relay
  • Dash – Shiftlight
  • Dash – Tacho
  • ECU
  • Injectors
  • Throttle Position Sensor
  • Inlet Air Temperature Sensor
  • Coilpack
  • Coolant Temp (ECU)
  • Lambda
  • Crank Position Sensor

– – –

  • Throttle Body Heater Connector
  • Idle Speed Stepper Motor aka Idle Control Valve (ICV)
  • Engine Fusbox
  • Engine Fusebox
  • Perge Valve Solenoid
  • Oil Level
  • Oil Pressure Switch
  • Alternator Live
  • Alternator Earth
  • Injector Relay
  • Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) Sensor
  • Knock Sensor
  • Starter Live
  • Starter Earth
  • Gearbox
  • Oil Pressure
  • Coolant Temp (Dash)
  • Gearbox Speed Sensor
  • Gearbox Earth

Some of the items on the standard loom are redundant with the Omex setup and Throttle Bodies so will be omitted. Other items will need the wiring preserving and so these will be raided from the spare loom. There’s also some necessities on the front lighting loom that I’ll consider splitting out and incorporating into the engine loom.

Engine Out

Empty Engine Bay

Engine and box are now out. The engine bay needs a fair bit of tidying up to remove bits and pieces like hoses, gear linkages and lines but the big jobs are now done. I will do some asking around to see if I can find some recommendations for a good powder coater locally and will get some bits sent off for refinishing. It seems that part of the ‘bay were painted with black stuff at some point in the past by a previous owner.

Weighing up what to do next the list is getting quite long in terms of bits that need cleaning up. What’s left to do:

  • Strip interior and front half of cage.
  • Remove fuel tank
  • Refurb engine bay
  • Refurb under rear beam and fuel tank (did under the boot this winter)
  • Refit beam and new front struts.
  • Fit new M/C, braided lines through out and Hi Specs
  • Fit braided fuel lines
  • Fit race battery in interior and wire in with cutoff
  • Check release bearing on gearbox – makes a worn bearing type noise when the clutch is released so I’m hoping that it’s this. A diff is on the menu, but I don’t really want the box rebuilt until it’s absolutely necessary
  • Refit engine, loom and ECU
  • Iron out loom wiring interface – power supply and dash inputs
  • Put car back on the road
