Then there was sound…

Managed to fix the speaker issue. Popped down to Maplins for some electrical connectors – bought some of the bullet-type male to female ones I’ve had before. Took the inside of the OS door off so I could get at everything. Turns out this door used to be black before being resprayed and fitted (previous one had been badly dinted)…

Removed the speaker from the NS door. This has been uprated to a Kenwood speaker that’s about three times the weight of the standard ones as fitted. Tested the speaker from the OS door and confirmed that it works. Definitely a wiring issue then! Connectors between main chassis and door are all good so it’s internal. Closer inspection reveals that the wiring loom is from something that had central locking and electric windows. Lots of wires that it could be!

Door Wiring Loom

Rigged up one of the speakers to make a test device. Identified that the sound signal was definitely being sent from the head unit. Then just had to go through a process of elimination of the 15 wires until I identified the pair carrying the signal. Cut everything else on the loom right back, taped it all up and joined the wiring back together. Reassembled and tested. Job done…

Found a spare door hinge mechanism rattling around in the bottom of the door too, for it’s size it could have been made of lead, so taking that out was some pretty cheap weight saving!
