Safety Devices

When I was working out which roll cage to go for one of the key considerations was weight. OMP do a 19Kg Chromoly Steel cage that has to be welded in. This cage is homologated to German ONS spec, but hasn’t been approved by the RAC/MSA for UK use. I thought about this option a lot, but in the end went for a Safety Devices 106 Cup Cage.

This is a highly regarded roll cage with a very well though out design and good fit. There’s always been some speculation in the exact weight of this. It’s often quoted as being in the region of 25kg. Any way here’s the exact break down on the weights.

Windscreen Bar – 1.92kg
Main Hoop – 10.51kg
Rear Section with Harness Bars – 9.94kg
Front Bars (x2) – 3.71kg each
Section Joiners (x6) – 0.31kg each
Door Bars (x2) – 1.70kg each
Fixings – 1.7kg
Total – 36.75kg

So that’s a lot heavier than people claim and doesn’t take into account the reinforcing plates that have to be welded in to the shell. Added to this are the Safety Devices Harnesses by Schroth at 1.8kg each. The Sparco Rev seats come in at a meagre 7kg each, but the choice of mountings then becomes important as I’ve weighted the Sparco subframes and steel side mounts and they come in at a whopping 5.95kg each.

Plenty to think about in terms of what’s going back in the car when it gets rebuilt.
