8v Follow Up

The car didn’t pass the MOT. The rear disc brakes were ineffective, the Carbon Monoxide was excessively high and one the headlights was slightly out with its aim. Headlight is easy. Exhaust is likely to be the catalytic converter which looks fairly ancient.

So sourced a new one for £54 complete with a fitting kit. Plenty of old bits of cat fell out a it came off, so looks like the core was falling apart.Good thing there was a fitting kit as the compression clamp bolts snapped off.

The brakes are a bit trickier. The rears don’t have much oomph to them on the 106, because too much rear end breaking is the quickest way to be saying hello to a hedge, lamp post or dry stone wall. There’s so little weight over the back end, not much powerful breaking is needed. The compensator increases the force to the rear brakes based on the ride height of the suspension. So the more compressed the rear end either through suspension lowering or heavy load then the more force the brakes have.

Sprayed it all up with WD40 and with very little effort it was all free and moving. So I am not that sure where the issue lies, the car had the fuel light on so filling the tank up is a sure fire way to get another 40kg of load over the rear end…
