I have all the parts for taking the column into a machine shop now, so I just needed to do some proper plans. They do a version of AutoCAD for Mac but I didn’t fancy having to get my head around how to use that and initial experiments with other CAD backages like CADintosh showed there was a steep learning curve and a fairly unintuitive system to get to grips with.

I use Sketchup for 3D modelling and it does what I need for the time being, allowing me to do some simple renders like these:

So I did some further research and found that the BPT-Pro3 plugin for Adobe Illustrator did all I needed.

I’m already really familiar with Illustrator so it sped up the design process massively and the plugin has some nice features. Here’s some outputs:
