So the car’s gone nowhere since arriving home as it had no springs on the front struts and the steering rack/column needed sorting. I bought a set of Bilstein B8s about the same time as the GTI which were sat in a box, so I thought that I’d convert the struts to coilovers. Dunc Conway did a great guide for 106 Rallye Register members.
The starting point once the spring pans were whacked off with a big hammer.

Box of bits from Rally Design

Blue paint wasn’t the best, so took everything back to bare metal and ground of the spring pan bumps so the threaded tubes could be test fitted

Etch primed the legs and hub, bearings are good so not popping them apart. Threaded tube cut to fit and welded on.

Modded the coilovers top spring pan by drilling out to 26mm to fit the top of the Billies

Modded the bottom part of the bearings to suit

Reckon that this will work once compressed under load and bolted up.

Rear shocks were looking a bit tired too. My last set of B8s bubbled the powder coat in the same places, so I tidied the rears up too. Everything in paint and dry fit test assembly. Bit of final prep work like retapping threads to clear paint residue and they’re done.
