The Rack

Since last week I ordered a few parts to sort out the steering rack and they arrived during the week. As I went to disassemble the rack it appears the tensioner screw plug had been staked in place. This wasn’t apparent until I tried to remove the screw as the damaged threads in the alloy casting stripped all the threads of the plastic part. In fairness there is nothing i could have done about it anyway and I wasn’t expecting it as the last rack I stripped had not been staked. Work on the rack is on hold because there’s no way to reassemble it until I get a new one. Any one got a spare rack kicking about?

As that had stopped play I finished reglazing the car. Stripped down both of the GTI doors and installed the electric window mechanisms and glass. I cleaned all the seals and refitted all of them as the S1 ones were a bit knackered being either distorted or split. The GTI ones have cleaned up okay. Anyone who has stripped down doors knows that it is a bit of a faff, but all done now. The glass was filthy!

I’ll need to have a think on the wiring. I don’t see the point in central locking (boot wont have it anyway) or electric mirrors so the question left on the door looms is whether I’ll want speakers and I am thinking yes for now so I’ll not chop those bits out.
