Been up to my eyeballs in work for the last month or so and getting very little time to work on the car. In fact haven't been down to the garage for more than a few hours in all that time. Managed a few hours this afternoon which was a welcome relief. In the mean... Continue Reading →
Recent Developments
Thursday night I was quite busy and didn't have much time, but decided I had just enough to finish up the EPAS work. Oh, how wrong could I be. I needed to press fit the inner bearing race onto the machine top hat. This was simple enough, just a case of getting the parts lined... Continue Reading →
Dash for Progress
About to become exceptinoally busy with work which will put a dampner on much progress in the coming month or so and as a result I am trying to make a bit of a push on the car. I suspect the biggest development is to finally decide the direction for the build, which is now... Continue Reading →
Fabrication Time
Well had a bit of time away and a chance to get perspective and decide what I wanted to do with the car. Came back with a bit more enthusiasm and then tonight managed to get a good few hours working on the car. Fabricated up some mounting points for the retaining straps that are... Continue Reading →
Make it Stronger
The more I looked at how other builders had fabricated mountings for fuel cells the more I decided that mine wasn't beefy enough so I have added in some additional sections to cross brace it with box section.
Welding Update
Found a bit of time to dress down the welds on the rear cross member and then weld on the final parts wihich are part of the reinforcements for the rear suspension mounts... Next step is to clean this section up and get it painted.
Steering Column Update
Here's the modified steering column and Lifeline weld-on boss all machined and ready to be welded up: The top hat acts as the bearing carrier for a roller bearing that supports the column inside an outer tube. It needs to be removable to replace the bearing and will be held in place with a roll... Continue Reading →
Update
So bit of progress in the last month... moving further back under the car I didn't like the look of this: So chopped it out... Then decided that the bottom of the box section also needed to be repaired, so chopped that and welded in a repair section. Finally finished the welding off tonight. Getting... Continue Reading →
Getting Sideways in a 106…
...well not one of mine, but that's not the point. My wife bought me a trip to Gwynnespeed down in Gloucestershire last year, but getting down there has taken some planning. They've recently moved to a new venue and it was a first for me driving a 106 on gravel and that alone made the... Continue Reading →
Update
Finished the Fuel Cell Framing last week and it's now in a base coat of POR15. Since then I've been doing some tidying up elsewhere on the shell, such as removing the studs that had held on the fusebox. The heads of these are real rust traps in the wheel arches so there was some... Continue Reading →
Fuel Cell Location Framing
So given I have a bit of down time to contend with I thought I would update on progress. I have finally have come around to framing up where the fuel cell mounts. This is partly to make the mounting more secure under lateral loads and to offer better fitment for the cell container and... Continue Reading →
Every Little Bit
Removed some more surplus bracketry from the car - these were the rear seatbelt reinforced mounting points.
