Back to Welding

Well managed an hour tonight, looking forward to getting some quality time on this over the next few weeks. Seeing as I am going down the heated windscreen route and have stripped out the heater matrix and blower, there was another hole to fill in the bulkhead. Stitched the steering rack support whilst I was... Continue Reading →

Progress

A few months ago I picked up some 3mm steel brackets that were surplus from a refurbishment of our office space. I think that they're used to mount door closure mechanisms or something similar. Anyway it turns out that they were nearly perfect to make good the repairs to the gearbox mount top plate. Chopped... Continue Reading →

Bumper Mounts

The bumper mounts are now finished ready for fitting. Despite quite a lot of effort working on the cardboard templates, I'd misaligned the wing mounting hole with the nut welded to the back and also the lower bumper securing hole. This meant when they were tacked on they didn't align correctly. Rather than start from... Continue Reading →

Fabrication

Did a few bits and pieces over the weekend, but not a huge about on the car. I finally finished fabricating up a pair of bumper mounts to be welded onto the inner wings. The old ones were rusty and caked in filler. Quite pleased with how they turned out

Update

I'd been thinking that I didn't really want to swiss cheese the repair plate to be able to use clecos to hold it together whilst plug welding so here is the solution. Create some cleco washer plates, then drill the plug weld holes and the clecos can then still be used. Did a bit more... Continue Reading →

Coming Together

Managed another couple of hours tonight. Time was mostly spent getting things lined up with the clecos and fitting together. Need to spend some more time on making things fit properly then it'll be time to drill for plug welds and start putting it all back together.

Slow Progress

Really unproductive weekend. Probably managed 3 hours on the project... Chopped out some more rotten bits. I'm happy I've got to the bottom of the problem areas now, so started making up repair sections. When it's all put back together this section creates a water trap on top of the chassis rail. There was really... Continue Reading →

Gusset Fabrication

Finally managed to get back to this. Having managed to get my hands on a sheet metal folder, I set about making the reinforcement gusset to sit inside the chassis rail. Starting point was a cardboard template which was transferred onto steel and shaped to give the initial shape. The chassis rail curves in the... Continue Reading →

SatchShift

Colin Satchell and Sandy Brown have developed a long lever rose-jointed quick shift kit for the 106. This is it: Affectionately known in 106 circles as the SatchShift kit, Colin sent it on the 10th December and it'd then been jammed in the Christmas post. It's nicely made down to the grease nipples on the... Continue Reading →

Back on the Road

Balance bar arrived for the crane plus some 1 tonne dee shackles. Just need to organise a few more bits and pieces for taking the engine in and out. As well as the usual hub nuts, engine oil, filter, box oil, coolant and drain/level plug washers, I need to consider a pair of new driveshaft... Continue Reading →
