Wishbone mount repair

When I scrapped the Silver GTI back in 2016, I chopped out the nearside wishbone mount as a whole assembly knowing that I would need it to repair the modification I made when the 1.6 engine and gearbox was fitted back in 2013. Wow 10 years ago. That time has gone quickly. Time has come to do that repair so here we go…

Donor repair section from a GTI

The GTI came with the chassis reinforcement plates as standard, but the series 1 Rallye did not and as I needed a pair of reinforcement plates, I’d previously back in November 2017 removed that from the cut out section.

Wishbone mount reinforcement plates,

That mean I was only dealing with a single thickness, but needed to replace both layers to repair the cut out section.

Previous notched wishbone mount

Lots of measuring, cardboard aided design and then chopping the donor wishbone mount produced these. Cut so there was a stepped overlap once they were welded back in.

Repair sections cut out of donor

Braced the wishbone mount on the car before starting and then welded in the repair pieces.

Repair sections going in

Dressed the welds, a lick of Zinc 182 primer and we’re done.
