Not long after I bought the car I chopped out the engine mount. This was a big deal because it had be fabricated as a one off by Harry Hockly to mount the EW engine. There were two reasons to tub the wheel arches and to allow a TU engine to be put back in the car whilst it went into storage. I carefully cut out the engine mount and so it went from this…
…to this.
Whilst the car was in storage I bought a new EW engine and so the long term plan was always to put the original engine mount back in, but it wasn’t going to be quick or simple to do. I’d left some reference points in place from the original position to be able to mount it back in place. In cutting out the TU mounting, I had damaged the tub so I cut that out and made a new panel to go back in. This also gave better visibility of the space to work in.
The first job was to repair the cut out section and get it square and level relative to the chassis as it sat on top of the chassis leg rail ready to go back in. This meant welding in some of the material lost when it had been cut out.
Repaired the tub section that was cut out.
Then it was welding it back in and finally making a section to tie in to the original engine mounting bracket.
